Principles of Design - Final Assignment ( Greeting Cards - Presentation )

For the last class of POD, we need to present and submit our final project which is the greeeting cards. Everyone set up at their own corners making it seems like an exhibition. Everyone explained the theme, things we learned through this assignment and things we like and hate while doing the assignment.

These will be my greeting cards:

Engagement

Wedding

Pregnancy

My theme is arts and crafts mainly based on sewing materials. For the engagement I did a love bird for the cover and placed a zip to seal the card. The inner part of the card is two movie tickets which is a gift given to the engaged couple.

For the wedding, I did a wedding dress for the cover page using lace, cloth and ribbons. I also did a hanger so it seems like the wedding dress is hanging on the page. For the inner part, I did two love shaped balloons using buttons and twines. I tied a knot using the balloon strings to congratulate the newlyweds.

For the pregnancy card, I made a pair of baby shoes using felts, lace and buttons for the envelope. I used a babies underwear/ diapers to make the body of the card and wrote a quote " Bun In The Oven " which means pregant .

I was amazed by the works of my classmates continously. Here are some of their works.

I really enjoy doing this assignment as I really love to do crafts. Exploring and doing material shopping is what I love most when you can find new materials and make use of them, implying them to different media and create a new design. If anyone asked what I hate about this assignment i would say absolutely nothing.

Before I end, I want to thanks Miss Lisa and all of my classmates which helped me alot throughout this semester. Thankyou.

Principles of Design - Final Assignment ( Greeting Cards )

Miss Lisa assigned our last assignment and asked us to prepare 3 themes and sketches about the ideation for the greeting cards to the class and proposed our ideas to her.

Here are my sketches:

The theme I proposed was pop up art, paper cutting and arts and craft.

Miss Lisa asked me to with the arts and craft and since I already had designs for the wedding and the new born baby, she suggested that I could make a series of cards with a story line from engagement, wedding to pregnancy.

Niew Seen Ying, (born December 1996, Malaysia). A Foundation in Design student in Taylor's University Lakeside Campus. Took the elective course Introduction to Photography out of curiosity. I used to be a person who have zero knowledge on the features of a camera. And for now, I'm in the progress of exploring the wonders of the camera while capturing moments creating memories within a click.

About the Photograph:

Photos taken at various locations. From the Morib Beach to the Lovers Bridge at Tanjung Sepat, Port Dickson to the Black Sand Beach at Pulau Langkawi. These were all places filled with memories with family and friends. During the past few weeks, I revisit the places with my friends and family. My love for the beach was not only for the memories but the sense of calmness and freedom. I must say that I love freedom more than anything else. The beach gives me a wide and endless feeling which I adore especially when we are living in this concrete city full of buildings and skyscraper. They give me a sense of opression and restriction which makes me feel uncomfortable. Therefore, beach will be a great getaway when I need to relax or even sooth my mood.

The beach made me realize the elements in life. The first picture were taken when I walk towards the end of the bridge. It may seem like an easy task for everyone else but it was definetly a hard time for me since I had a bridge phobia since young. It actually took me 30 minutes to reach the end and I took a photo to record my achievement and determination. I took the photo with a lower shutter speed due to the sudden exposure change cause the sun is setting real fast and since I did not bring my tipod along I tried not to set the shutter speed lower. I chose to set the f stop at 5 cause I hope it can make the depth of the photo greater to capture the bridge as long as it can.

The second and the third photo was focusing on the details such as the waves, sea shells and the prints on the sand. We need to pay attention to the little things in our lifes because it may made a big difference to our future. Observing if the sand is smooth or full with prints is just like realizing the up and downs we go through. I set the ISO lower since the environment is bright enough. I capture the photos with a high shutter speed so that there will be lesser movements and gives a still feeling.

The photo with the leaf gives the meaning of looking through a different perspective. Took the photo with a low ISO because it was a bright afternoon. The shutter speed is adjusted to suit the exposure and the zones in the picture. I chose to leave the focal point at 8 to give a feeling of a focus on the leaf while capturing the tracks on the sand without going to far.

The last photo was actually taken when I was waiting for a boat to hop to another island. The island in the photo was told to be the next destination and I took it to make a comparison with the picture of a closer view of the island. This made me realize that if we made an effort on reaching a goal, we can definetely achieve it now matter how long it takes just like the island hopping. Although its a long journey, I am happy that I finished it. I took the photo with a low ISO since it is in the afternoon and it is quite bright. I shot it with a shutter speed of 1/500 to capture a little bit of movements of the waves without making the movement too obvious. The f stop is on 5 cause I want to capture the island more clearly and it is the furthest the setting can go.

In conclusion, it is a great opportunity to do my final project while recalling awesome memories with the most important peoples in my life. Although the photos may be mainstream since alot of people will take scenic photos, these meant a lot to me cause I believe in the quote " Memories retained within a click."

Introduction to Photography
Exercise 5: Lighting

Lecture
There are different types of lighting in the studio:

Main light
- the first light to be put up
- illuminates major portion of the image
- other lights are constructed around this light

Fill light
- relieve the shadow areas created by the main light, thereby reducing the contrast
- produces detail in the shadow area
- can be replaced with a reflector

Rim light
- gives form or structure around the object or subject being photographed
- creates a silhouette around the subject/object thereby revealing its shape
- often acts as a highlight

Hair light
- illuminates and gives texture to the hair

Background light

Instructions
Replicate a studio portrait from the 1940s or from the 1950s.

Reflection
I'm amused that the lightings made different mood and tone to the photos. I actually enjoyed doing this exercise with my course mates especially when we were looking at each other posing for our own photos. Its actually quite amazing that some of them did a really good job in posing that they look almost the same as the photos they chose. In this exercise, everyone plays a role no matter the lighting crew, make up artists or the camera man. All of us did a fairly good job and it bonds us more as everyone is an important character in a photoshoot. For my photo, I couldn't replicate the expression of the model very well. Although it is almost the same but it brings two different feelings. I wish  that I can do better next time if we had a chance to do it again.
