Exercise 5: Lighting

Lecture
There are different types of lighting in the studio:

Main light
- the first light to be put up
- illuminates major portion of the image
- other lights are constructed around this light

Fill light
- relieve the shadow areas created by the main light, thereby reducing the contrast
- produces detail in the shadow area
- can be replaced with a reflector

Rim light
- gives form or structure around the object or subject being photographed
- creates a silhouette around the subject/object thereby revealing its shape
- often acts as a highlight

Hair light
- illuminates and gives texture to the hair

Background light

Instructions
Replicate a studio portrait from the 1940s or from the 1950s.

Reflection
I'm amused that the lightings made different mood and tone to the photos. I actually enjoyed doing this exercise with my course mates especially when we were looking at each other posing for our own photos. Its actually quite amazing that some of them did a really good job in posing that they look almost the same as the photos they chose. In this exercise, everyone plays a role no matter the lighting crew, make up artists or the camera man. All of us did a fairly good job and it bonds us more as everyone is an important character in a photoshoot. For my photo, I couldn't replicate the expression of the model very well. Although it is almost the same but it brings two different feelings. I wish  that I can do better next time if we had a chance to do it again.
