2D Design - Assignment 4 - ( Unconventional Batik)

Miss Lisa gave us a new assignment brief through facebook. It is a unconventional batik assignment which we need to get in a group of four and design a batik piece by using an A3 sized batik each. I group up with Jia Lun, Cong and Kokulan which is considered as a fresh thing for me as I had never been in a group with any of them except for Kokulan.

On the next day, we reached class early and discussed about our drawing style and things we like to combine in the batik piece. Jia lun suggested to use parrot in the batik piece. After that, we discussed about Cong's drawing style and decided to do a detailed drawing. Kokulan suggestion was to do a chain of animals from a particular country and mine was to use colours from colourful to monotonous. In combination of our suggestions, Jia Lun came out with an idea of using a food chain and apply it as the realistic part of our life. We discussed about the construction of the batik and decided to play around with only animals without the arrows which is normally drawn on the food chain diagram. After that, we chose the animals we wanted to use and decided to use a grasshopper as the primary consumer, frog as the secondary consumer, snake as the tertiary consumer and eagle as the last one standing. We came out with composition of a curve with the animals hurting or eating each other. While we were drawing out compositions which we desire, Kokulan's and Cong's idea coincidentally matches and we decided to use that composition.

After we proposed it to Miss Lisa, she asked us to draw the composition in a more detail way with the way we are going to connect the four batiks. We drew the actual design and showed it to Miss Lisa again. This time, she told us to draw on 4 a4 papers and connect it with a masking tape and distribute an animal for each of us to do. For me, I chose the eagle, Cong the snake, Jialun with the frog and Kokulan with the grasshopper and leaves. After we drawn everything on the a4 papers we combine it together and adjusted the size. We play around with the different sizes and came out with the final design which four of us agree and desire.

Below will be the process photos:
